5 Ways to Support Your Baby’s Sensory Growth at Home

Updated: Nov 4

Hey there, mamas! If you’ve got a little one at home, you’re probably noticing all the curious looks, the tiny hands reaching out to grab everything, and the pure excitement they get from exploring new textures and sounds.

Babies are natural explorers, and helping them engage those senses is one of the best things we can do for their development.

Here are five simple, fun ways you can support your baby’s sensory growth right at home. And don’t worry—these ideas are super easy to set up, and they don’t require you to be Pinterest-perfect. Let’s dive in!

1. Touchy-Feely Play

Babies love touching different textures! Create a little "sensory bin" at home. You can fill a shallow container with things like soft fabric scraps, crinkly paper, smooth stones (supervised, of course!), or even cotton balls. Let your baby feel each item and watch their reaction as they explore. This can help them learn about different textures and build fine motor skills in the process. Plus, it’s so cute to watch their little faces light up!

2. Get Messy with DIY Sensory Dough

Yes, I’m talking about good old-fashioned sensory dough. Making your own dough is easy, safe, and babies love squishing and molding it. All you need is flour, salt, water, and a bit of oil, and you’ve got a simple dough that’s baby-safe. Add a few drops of food coloring for a pop of color, or even a little vanilla or cinnamon for a smell sensation! Just remember to supervise them as they play, especially if they’re in the “everything goes in the mouth” stage. Or, for our busiest mommas, check out our premade Sensory-Dough Crafts here. They're a lot of sensory fun!

3. Baby-Safe Music Jams

Introduce your baby to sounds and rhythm! Put on some baby-friendly music, or grab a few basic instruments like shakers or a small tambourine (even a wooden spoon and pot will do!). Let them explore making sounds on their own or dance along to the beat. Exposing your baby to different types of sounds and music helps their auditory development and can actually lay the groundwork for early language skills. And who doesn’t love a mini-dance party?

4. Smell Adventure in the Kitchen

Babies are constantly learning about the world through all their senses, including smell. Take a little trip to your spice rack and let your baby smell different herbs and spices—try cinnamon, basil, or even a little vanilla extract. Just put a tiny amount on a tissue or cotton ball, and let them take a gentle sniff. It’s a great way to introduce them to new smells and textures (and a great way to cook up some giggles too).

5. Visual Play with Lights and Shadows

Babies are fascinated by lights and shadows, and playing with them can stimulate visual development. Try using a small flashlight in a dim room, moving it gently back and forth. You can also hang a mobile with contrasting colors over their play space or use high-contrast black-and-white books or toys. Watching the light dance around keeps them curious and engaged, all while helping their little eyes focus and track.

Supporting your baby’s sensory growth doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. These simple activities can be done with things you already have around the house, and they’re perfect for helping your little one learn about the world through play.

The best part? It’s all about spending time together, and that’s something they’ll love the most. Happy exploring!
